Loy Krathong
Floating Lattern Festival
The Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated across the whole nation and is one of the most picturesque festivals in Thailand. The exact date of Loy Krathon is determined by the Thai lunar calendar, each year the date is different. However, the festival is always held on the 12th full moon of the year, which is usually in November, at the end of the rainy season. Really magical scenes will be ensured when the full-moon will light up the sky and thousands of lighted candles will be either carried, located in houses and temples, flying in the sky or floating on the rivers. Especially the floating lighted candles ensure a beautiful scene which you must experience. The name of those floating objects is Krathong, in English there is not really a word for it. Traditionally the Krathong is made of a slice of a banana tree trunk and crafted into a lotus shape by the use of folded leaves of a banana. Nowadays the Krathong is made of different materials. For example coconut shells, bread and Styrofoam is used by the creative Thai people, especially the Krathong made of bread is really eco-friendly since after a while it will decompose into food for the fish.
